As we all enjoy these last few weeks of summer, it’s time to start prepping our beauty cabinets with essentials to keep our skin in tip-top shape as we enter fall.  Being proactive with your beauty regime means hanging onto that summer glow just a bit longer, and preventing many common cold-weather skin concerns.

1. Change Up Your Bath and Shower Habits

Soft skin begins with cleansing it properly.  First, make sure that you’re using warm (not hot) water in your bath or shower.  The same goes when cleansing your face – be sure you’re using lukewarm or cool water.  Hot water will strip your skin of moisture and leave it feeling itchy and dry, whereas a warm shower will prep your skin to absorb your after-shower lotions and moisturizers. We often hear that face cleansers shouldn’t leave your skin feeling tight and squeaky clean, and the same applies for body washes.  Look for a formula that’s gentle and/or has an added moisturizer.  The Moisturizing Body Wash from Dermalogica is a creamy formula that is soap-free.  For an even more decadent experience, we work Aromatherapy Associates’ Bath and Shower Oils into our routine.  It’s best to use just before stepping into your bath or shower – the aromatherapy works nearly instantaneously (our favorite is Revive to get us going in the morning), and the oil is an excellent pre-cleanse moisturizers.

If you have the luxury of time for a bath, make it a restorative experience for both skin and mind.  Mullein and Sparrow’s Rose Bath Salts use mineral-rich salts to restore and replenish skin, while the organic essential rose oil is known as a powerful aromatherapy treatment.  The beautiful rose petals also add a nice touch to your bath water.

2. Keep Skin Soft and Supple

The best way to fight back against dry, flaky skin that can begin in the fall is to prevent it from occurring.  While this may sound like we’re oversimplifying the problem, switching out a few key products will make a significant impact.  One of our favorite fall products is Drunk Elephant’s B Hydra Gel.  Whether swapping this out for your lighter summer serums or adding it as an extra step, we love putting this on as part of our PM routine.  You’ll wake up with smooth, moisturized skin, that never feels oily.To take care of lips, we stick with Kari Gran’s Lip Whip.  This ultra-moisturizing lip balm is highly effective, and is guilt-free: it uses organic, sustainably-sourced ingredients.  Best of all, it provides a subtle shine and is perfect to use both day and night.  And don’t forget your body! While we like to use light lotions or spray moisturizers in the summer, it’s time to switch back to creams and oils come pumpkin spice latte season.

3. Hands and Feet Are the Windows to Your Beauty Routine

We’ve all heard that we’re immediately sized-up by those we meet within a few seconds, whether it’s conscious or sub-conscious.  One of the most telling, and visually available, signs of a person’s grooming habits are their nails.  We use our fingers when eating, gesturing, pointing, etc., so why not keep them pristine? While we love dark, vampy colors on our nails in the fall, it’s definitely a high-maintenance look.  If you don’t have the time or budget to make it into your nail salon at least once a week, opt for a natural look with short, shaped nails and clear or nude polish.Perhaps most importantly in autumn, don’t forget to care for your cuticles.  This is the time of year that they can begin to dry out and look flaky.  A quick swipe of cuticle oil before bed usually does the trick to keep them in a healthy condition.  If you notice your cuticles are still a little dry, keep a bottle at your desk and apply once or twice throughout the day.  Cuticle oil can take a few minutes to dry, so it’s perfect before you begin typing that long email or article.

Lastly, don’t forget your feet.  While you may not be wearing strappy sandals every day any longer, don’t neglect your feet until it’s too late to bring them back to their former glory.  You can definitely extend the length of time between pedicures this time of year, but don’t forgo them altogether.  Also, try using a dry exfoliating brush on the soles of your feet once or twice a week before jumping in the shower.  When you slather on your body moisturizer, make sure to hit this area as well.

4. Hair It Is

Autumn is the perfect time to begin playing with new hair colors, but the combination of cooler, dryer weather and color treatments can wreak havoc on your hair and scalp.  Be sure to use a shampoo that cleanses gently to avoid stripping any needed moisture.  If you are coloring your hair, this will also extend the life and vibrancy of your hair color.  Look for a conditioner that’s a bit heavier as well in order to prevent dry-hair related frizz and to restore shine.Conditioning becomes increasingly important this time of year, so much so, that most experts recommend adding a weekly deep conditioning treatment to your routine.  Use an overnight hair masque or slather on a treatment before climbing into a bath.  Be sure to massage it into your scalp to keep it healthy as well and prevent flakes.  Try making this part of your Sunday routine to prep for the week ahead, and enjoy shiny, healthy hair all week long.

One of the best ways that you can protect your hair from over-drying is to avoid too frequent shampooing.  This is easy to do if you take care of an oily scalp with a dry shampoo.  We love most products from French beauty brand Klorane, and their dry shampoo is no exception.  Try spraying a bit around your scalp after blow-drying as a preventative measure, and use as-needed over the next few days.

It’s not necessary to use all of the tips and products mentioned here; pick those that work best with your skin type, lifestyle and schedule.  Even small changes can make a big impact on keeping you radiant from head-to-toe.

We all need self-care time, and for many of us, that goes hand-in-hand with spa time. Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to fill our weeks with spa appointments due to our busy schedules or budgetary concerns. Just because you can’t hit the spa several times a week, there’s no need to skip the things that make you look and feel your best. We’re here to help you incorporate some spa practices into your everyday life.

Home Ambiance

It may not be possible to have a clutter-free home 24/7, but try to dedicate one room or space to your zen living. Whether that’s your bedroom, bathroom, or even a closet, make this space yours. Keep this area clean and free of clutter, and make it feel like a sanctuary by decorating with colors that speak to you. Purchase flowers (it doesn’t need to be an extravagant arrangement) several times a month to keep a garden-like setting. Try arranging candles throughout, or decorating with inspirational photos. When you have a few moments to pamper yourself, this is the space to utilize. It also makes a great retreat when you need a few moments of mediation or grounding breath work.

Evening Routine

We all have our evening routines, but often times it feels like a chore to complete these tasks. Make this time special by slipping in some extra pampering. Before washing your face, light a scented candle and put your hair back with a silk scarf. After applying your cleanser, give yourself a quick 2-minute facial massage. This can help lymphatic drainage and also provides a lift to your skin and a quick radiance boost. Check out a simple massage routine here.

Spa Hour

If you find yourself with a free afternoon (or more likely, a free hour or two), make it special (e.g., turn off the Netflix). Use this time to give yourself a home facial. If you’ve got the time, go for the full routine. Start with an indulgent bath with bath salts and body oil, before wrapping yourself in your favorite fluffy robe. While you’re masking, use this time to shape your nails and apply a luxurious body cream.

Working these types of items into our daily routines will keep us all looking more polished, but there’s certainly more to be gained than a change to our physical appearance. The more frequently you squeeze in some home spa-time, in whatever form appeals to you, the more you’ll notice lower stress levels and a sense of being grounded.

Gifting is hard. We get that, and we formed Jean and Jade to help make the process a bit easier and more rewarding. In addition to providing amazing gift boxes of our own, we’re here to help with gift inspiration. So this week, we hit the streets of Atlanta (where we’re proudly based) to ask people about the best gift they’ve received. Read on to spark some original ideas to wow your recipient.

  • Nicole, 30: “I’d been having a really stressful time at work, and my boyfriend surprised me by planning a long weekend away at the beach. It was so thoughtful that he planned every detail and knew it was just what I needed. It ended up being both therapeutic and romantic.”
  • Vicki, 33: “I once received a really classic pair of diamond earrings from my then-boyfriend for my birthday. They’re so timeless that I still wear them all the time. Don’t tell my current boyfriend where they came from!”
  • Jessica, 29: “The best gift I’ve received from my fiancé was a pair of concert tickets to see the Rolling Stones. They were actually here on our anniversary. I’m a big fan, but also, because they’re so iconic, it’s a memory I’ll never forget. I can tell my grandkids that we saw them live!”
  • Sonia, 38: “Am I the only one who likes to receive lingerie? When my husband gives me something beautiful and sexy, it reaffirms that he thinks that I’m beautiful and sexy”.
  • Allison, 26: “Any kind of surprise is my favorite. I love to be surprised!”
  • Libby, 35: “I guess I’m an old-fashioned girl, because I love to get jewelry. Probably my favorite was a really beautiful gold necklace. I’m actually wearing it today! Oh, and I also love when my husband makes special plans or dinners for us when there’s no special occasion.”
  • Ria, 41: “Shoes. It’s got to be shoes.”
  • Karen, 35: “Gifts in general are nice! It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant, sometimes the little things mean just as much.”
  • Diane, 24: “Um, my engagement ring? That was pretty special.”
  • Shelly, 32: “My boyfriend bought me a power bag that I’d been eyeing for a big, important work trip. It might not be romantic to some people, but to me, it meant everything.”

We hope this was helpful in finding an outside-the-box gift, or remembering a classic idea, for whatever special occasion you’re celebrating. Any of our gifting specialists are available to chat if you are looking for more help. Happy Gifting!

Americans send flowers for many types of occasions and to express many feelings: “happy birthday”, “just thinking of you”, “happy anniversary”, “I love you” and even “I’m sorry” are common reasons to send or receive a bouquet. While we’ll never be disappointed at receiving our favorite arrangement, we think there are many times that a more original, personalized approach would leave a better impression. So the next time you have reason to let someone know you’re thinking of them on a special day, whatever the reason, think outside the box. Your wife, girlfriend, sister or BFF will be thrilled at the thought that went into your unique gift. Read on to learn some of our favorite ideas.

woman opening delivery gift box for special occasion

Spa Day/Hour

For some women with ultra-busy schedules, time is one of life’s greatest luxuries. Gift her with an appointment or gift card for her favorite spa or salon. If she has kids (and you are available) offer to watch them while she indulges in some “me time”. Best of all, most spas offer treatments tailored to whatever type of woman she is: a facial for the skincare enthusiast, a massage for the athlete or executive, a deep conditioning treatment and blowout for the woman who pampers her hair, or a bundle of treatments for those who love it all. While a full spa day is nice, even an hour long pedicure can do wonders to restore her mind and body.

Surprise Date Night

Most women lead such busy lives, that the idea of having a few hours during which they don’t need to do all of the planning is quite appealing. Whether you’re in a romantic relationship or just pals, plan an evening out that she’ll relish. She’ll probably appreciate a hint regarding what she should wear, and let the rest be a complete surprise. For example, if your wife laments the beautiful new cocktail dress that she hasn’t had an occasion to wear, tell her to deck herself out and take her to a hot new restaurant or performance. Score bonus points by stopping off at a nice cocktail bar first for a pre-dinner aperitif.

Gift Box

The best part of sending a gift box is that you can personalize it to her exact interests and tastes. Jean & Jade has mastered the art of the gift box, so that you can impress her with luxurious packaging and an expertly curated selection of gift items from which to choose. You can build your own box, or choose by occasion. They even have experts on staff to walk you through the selection if you need a little more guidance. Just choose the date that you’d like the package to be delivered, and voila: you’ve wowed her with your thoughtfulness.

Regardless of which gift you choose, the idea that you chose a unique gift for her will impress her immensely. So the next time you need to celebrate a birthday, or any of life’s other occasions, take a cue from us and try out one of these suggestions. You’ll not only score points, but may find yourself enjoying the entire gift-giving process more as well.

It’s that time of year when most of us fall into one of two camps: those who are vacationing and those who are enviously eyeing the Instagram feeds of those who are vacationing.  If you’re still stuck at your desk or at home, we’re here to tell you that it’s time to pack your bags. Maybe you can’t manage a two-week trip on the other side of the globe, but sometimes the long weekend trips are even more rewarding. You can squeeze all of the excitement and relaxation that you can handle into three or four days, and come back to the real world feeling like a new you. Make it a trip with your girlfriends, and you’ll get some serious bonding time in to boot. So take a scan through our favorite girls getaway picks below, and start packing your bags and clearing space for your photos.

Wine Country

As with all of the picks on our list, some destinations are easier for a short trip based on where you live. But if you live on the west coast, you’re in luck. Whether you prefer the laid back vibes of Sonoma, the glitz of Napa, or the hushed beauty of Willamette, you’re a stones throw away from several world class wine regions.  Take your pick based on the feel of each area, but also on which wines they’re best known for. For example, if you’re a pinot noir or pinot gris lover, you’ll be in heaven in Willamette Valley.  Possibly the best part of your trip (which is saying a lot since you’ll be allowed to drink wine all day) is the accommodations available for you and your crew. There’s everything from cozy B&B’s to luxurious spa resorts.  Your evenings spent in after a long day of touring will be just as memorable as the rest of the vacation. And if you’re an east coaster, there are several options available in your neck of the woods as well. We’re big fans of the wineries in Finger Lakes, New York. And don’t automatically dismiss some of the wine regions further south, such as in parts of Virginia or North Georgia. While less established, these areas are taking wine making seriously and putting out some respectable labels.

Charleston

Charleston is one of those cities that everyone should visit at least once, because it’s so unique from any other place on earth. Both warm (southern hospitality is real here) and elegant, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the top wedding destinations in the country. But why leave it to romantic getaways? Charleston is an amazing choice for a girls’ weekend. There’s something here to please everyone in your group: the foodie, the history buff, the art lover and the partier. Charleston’s restaurants are consistently ranked some of the best nationwide, and their late-night scene offers everything from laid-back dive bars to sophisticated lounges.  Wondering where to stay?  There are so many beautiful hotels that it’s hard to pick just one, but we’re especially partial to the Belmond Charleston Place and the Market Pavilion Hotel. Both are in the middle of all of the action, but offer a luxurious respite from the surroundings.  If you’re heading there in the summer, the Market Pavilion edges to first place by a hair thanks to its rooftop pool. Pro tip: be sure to take a bike taxi at least once and have your camera ready!

Florida Keys

Looking for some fun and sun? Sure, you could head to Miami like everyone else, but if you’ve got a bit more time we urge you to keep going south. The Florida Keys make for an amazing road trip. You can fly directly into Key West, but flights are typically a bit more affordable into Fort Lauderdale or Miami. Just know that this will add a couple of hours of drive time. Once you’ve reached the keys, either on the northern end at Key Largo, or the southern end at Key West, you’ll have a 100 mile stretch of road connecting the over 1,000 islands. Of course, some islands are tiny and uninhabited, while others are primed for tourists.  While all of the islands are physically beautiful, the real beauty of the keys lies in the distinct differences from island to island. There are too many great stops to list, but the one can’t-miss selfie spot is the Southernmost Point Buoy marking the southern tip of the continental United States.  If you plan to spend most of your time in Key West, Sunset Key Cottages are perfect for a group and offer luxury amenities.  If you’d prefer to stay off the beaten path, you can’t go wrong with Little Palm Island. This stunning resort manages rustic luxury better than we’ve ever seen, and is accessible only by sea-plane or boat.

Girls’ getaways can take on many forms. After all, they can be as unique as the women themselves. Adventure seekers may want to hike through the canyons of Arizona, while spa lovers might choose to settle into a spa resort and not leave the property until its time to go home. While it might seem like an unnecessary luxury, a girls getaway is a gift to yourself that you should indulge in at least every couple of years. You’ll return feeling refreshed, renewed, and reinvigorated, with memories to last a lifetime.

Most of us have heard about the reputed benefits of aromatherapy, and we fall into two camps: those who are diehard fans and those who’ve written it off as offering no more than a placebo effect. After moving from the latter camp to the former, we’re here to set the record straight on the real, tangible benefits that aromatherapy offers.

aromatherapy diffuser on table with ornamental herbs

Aromatherapy Defined

First, what exactly is aromatherapy? It’s typically defined as using essential oils through a diffuser or topically.  It’s a holistic approach that has been practiced for centuries throughout many different cultures. And, if you’re not one to believe that countless cultures have passed on their secrets for a reason, there’s now modern-day scientific evidence to back up many of its uses.

Essential Oil Uses

Essential oils have a myriad number of uses. Stress relief,  pain and headache relief, insomnia, lethargy, depression and digestive issues can all be positively impacted. First, make sure that you’re using high-quality, pure essential oils. When matching the proper oil to the ailment, you may find yourself amazed at the results.  Some of the most commonly used oils are:

  • Lavender
  • Ylang ylang
  • Jasmine
  • Peppermint
  • Lemon
  • Sage
  • Chamomile
  • Rosemary
  • Sandalwood

Many people find that a blend of several oils works best for their particular use.

Essential Oil Diffuser Benefits

Although we’re fans of topical use, one of our favorite ways to use essential oils is in a diffuser.  If you’re having trouble sleeping, try filling your diffuser with filtered water and a few drops of lavender, chamomile and jasmine oil. Your insomnia will dissipate as the oils are released into the air and relaxation sets in. Suffering from a headache? Try a blend of peppermint, rosemary and sandalwood. For a caffeine-free energy boost, mix up a concoction featuring jasmine, rosemary, and tea tree oil. Think of your diffuser as a natural air freshener that has the added benefit of aiding your mind and body.

Other Uses

While we love diffusers, essential oils can also be beneficial when applied to our skin. Try putting a drop or two in carrier oil and applying it to pulse points or the bottom of your feet. Another great option is to use products that feature high-grade essential oils in their ingredients. Often times the best smelling essential oils are used in this way, but they can still serve a variety of benefits (on top of the lovely smell)!  We are big fans of the ritual of getting ready, be it for an evening out or a relaxing night at home. You’ll be amazed at how much the process of bathing, slathering on body oil and dressing changes when you use products with oils that are designed to relax vs. revitalize.

If you’re already using bubble baths, body oils, shower gels, what do you have to lose by trying out a new one featuring an oil that’s targeted to your needs? If you’re as impressed as we think you will be, you might find yourself taking the plunge of purchasing a diffuser and working it into your daily routine. Let us know how you’re feeling after giving it a go!

If your anniversary is around the corner, chances are, you’re busy trying to come up with the perfect gift for your wife or girlfriend.  We’re here to help – whether your budget is $50 or $10,000, we’ve got you covered.  An anniversary gift is different than a gift you’d select for another occasion, such as her birthday.  It should be romantic, and celebrate what she brings to your life.  We’ve compiled some ideas to help with the search: keep reading below to find our top picks for this occasion.

Traditional Gifts by Year

If you’re celebrating a wedding anniversary, you may want to consider the “traditional” gift for your particular wedding anniversary year.  Each year of marriage corresponds to a traditional and modern theme – either option is an excellent place to get started in your search.  For example, a first anniversary traditional gift is paper and a modern gift is a clock.  You could have your paper wedding invitation framed, or gift her with artwork depicting the city in which you were married.  You could also find an antique clock that will fit beautifully on your mantle, or one which has sentimental value for some reason.  A gift from one of these yearly themes is an excellent choice if your wife loves tradition.  It shows great thought and care went into the selection, and is something she’ll treasure for many more years.

Lingerie

We’ll let you in on a little secret: women love to feel sexy, and especially to feel that they’re sexy in your eyes.  Let her know that she’s the object of your desire with some special lingerie.  Of course, this gift needs to be appropriate to the particular anniversary: if you’re newly dating and celebrating one month as a couple, she may find it objectionable.  You be the judge on where you’re at in your relationship.  That being said, if you know you’re at a place where she’ll be amenable to it, try to select something that you’ll both appreciate.  If its in the budget, gift her with a bra and panty matching set in a brand that’s a step (or two) above her everyday-wear.  If you’re really wanting to splurge, check out La Perla for timeless pieces or Agent Provocateur for something that’s a bit more playful.

A babydoll or nightgown is another excellent choice, and is more forgiving if its not the perfect size.  Or perhaps you’ve heard her mention she’d love a new robe or wrap (or seen her old one get a bit ratty) – a silk or chiffon robe will make her feel beautiful as she’s getting ready for an evening out, or enjoying an evening in.  We love In Bloom Intimates by Jonquil for budget-friendly, yet elegant, pieces.

Surprise Delivery

An anniversary is an excellent time to surprise her with a present.  Jean & Jade makes it easy: you can shop our packages by occasion (such as anniversary), or you can create your own gift box.  Either way, you’re shopping products that were hand-picked, tried, tested and loved by their expert team.  Their gifts are unique in that you can choose the exact delivery date at checkout, and her gift will be delivered to her door.  Send it to your home, or think outside the box and send it to her office or the hotel room you’ll be sharing for a long weekend.  Don’t forget to include a gift message letting her know you care.  Your gift will arrive beautifully packaged and wrapped with care.

Jean and Jade’s anniversary packages feature items that women love, that are both romantic and luxurious.  Items such as sheer robes, gourmet chocolates, bath salts, fragrances and body oil.  While each set is unique, you can also build your own package by choosing from their wide array of items sold individually.  If you have questions or need guidance, Jean & Jade has a team working ‘round the clock to help you make the perfect choice and ensure your wife or girlfriend is thrilled with her gift.

Jewelry

Jewelry is cliché for a reason.  While their tastes in it may vary, most women love some type of baubles.  Perhaps she loves a particular type of gemstone.  If not, her birthstone is a great place to start.  Or, choose a metal-only piece or diamonds for items that will be transitional.  Typically, a piece of jewelry that features smaller stones (or none at all) can be more casual, and she’ll get everyday wear out of it.  These pieces are more practical, as they can be dressed up or down.  That’s not to say that every woman shouldn’t have a few glamorous pieces, such as cocktail rings or statement necklaces.

For an anniversary, you may choose a more sentimental item.  A new band to stack with her engagement ring and wedding ring set is a popular look, and symbolically means that your adding to your love.  A necklace or bracelet that features the birthstones of your family is thoughtful, as it represents the family in a way that she can wear and be reminded of what the two of you have created.  Or, if you’ve seen her lusting after an item in a jewelry shop’s window, what better time to splurge? Either way, jewelry is another gift that will be kept and treasured (perhaps even passed down) for some time.

Choosing the perfect gift is never easy, and we know it can be especially difficult when the occasion carries as much weight as an anniversary.  Don’t let it stress you out: use our tips as a guideline, and think about her and what she likes.  Also, don’t feel that you have to stick to only one category, or one large gift.  Decide on your budget, and feel free to pick several smaller items.  For example, send her an Jean & Jade gift box on the day of your anniversary, and treat her to a romantic dinner where you present her with another token of your affection, such as a print or necklace.  Most of all, remember that she’s unique, and her gift can be as well.
