Best Destinations for a Girls Getaway

It’s that time of year when most of us fall into one of two camps: those who are vacationing and those who are enviously eyeing the Instagram feeds of those who are vacationing.  If you’re still stuck at your desk or at home, we’re here to tell you that it’s time to pack your bags. Maybe you can’t manage a two-week trip on the other side of the globe, but sometimes the long weekend trips are even more rewarding. You can squeeze all of the excitement and relaxation that you can handle into three or four days, and come back to the real world feeling like a new you. Make it a trip with your girlfriends, and you’ll get some serious bonding time in to boot. So take a scan through our favorite girls getaway picks below, and start packing your bags and clearing space for your photos.

Wine Country

As with all of the picks on our list, some destinations are easier for a short trip based on where you live. But if you live on the west coast, you’re in luck. Whether you prefer the laid back vibes of Sonoma, the glitz of Napa, or the hushed beauty of Willamette, you’re a stones throw away from several world class wine regions.  Take your pick based on the feel of each area, but also on which wines they’re best known for. For example, if you’re a pinot noir or pinot gris lover, you’ll be in heaven in Willamette Valley.  Possibly the best part of your trip (which is saying a lot since you’ll be allowed to drink wine all day) is the accommodations available for you and your crew. There’s everything from cozy B&B’s to luxurious spa resorts.  Your evenings spent in after a long day of touring will be just as memorable as the rest of the vacation. And if you’re an east coaster, there are several options available in your neck of the woods as well. We’re big fans of the wineries in Finger Lakes, New York. And don’t automatically dismiss some of the wine regions further south, such as in parts of Virginia or North Georgia. While less established, these areas are taking wine making seriously and putting out some respectable labels.

Charleston

Charleston is one of those cities that everyone should visit at least once, because it’s so unique from any other place on earth. Both warm (southern hospitality is real here) and elegant, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the top wedding destinations in the country. But why leave it to romantic getaways? Charleston is an amazing choice for a girls’ weekend. There’s something here to please everyone in your group: the foodie, the history buff, the art lover and the partier. Charleston’s restaurants are consistently ranked some of the best nationwide, and their late-night scene offers everything from laid-back dive bars to sophisticated lounges.  Wondering where to stay?  There are so many beautiful hotels that it’s hard to pick just one, but we’re especially partial to the Belmond Charleston Place and the Market Pavilion Hotel. Both are in the middle of all of the action, but offer a luxurious respite from the surroundings.  If you’re heading there in the summer, the Market Pavilion edges to first place by a hair thanks to its rooftop pool. Pro tip: be sure to take a bike taxi at least once and have your camera ready!

Florida Keys

Looking for some fun and sun? Sure, you could head to Miami like everyone else, but if you’ve got a bit more time we urge you to keep going south. The Florida Keys make for an amazing road trip. You can fly directly into Key West, but flights are typically a bit more affordable into Fort Lauderdale or Miami. Just know that this will add a couple of hours of drive time. Once you’ve reached the keys, either on the northern end at Key Largo, or the southern end at Key West, you’ll have a 100 mile stretch of road connecting the over 1,000 islands. Of course, some islands are tiny and uninhabited, while others are primed for tourists.  While all of the islands are physically beautiful, the real beauty of the keys lies in the distinct differences from island to island. There are too many great stops to list, but the one can’t-miss selfie spot is the Southernmost Point Buoy marking the southern tip of the continental United States.  If you plan to spend most of your time in Key West, Sunset Key Cottages are perfect for a group and offer luxury amenities.  If you’d prefer to stay off the beaten path, you can’t go wrong with Little Palm Island. This stunning resort manages rustic luxury better than we’ve ever seen, and is accessible only by sea-plane or boat.

Girls’ getaways can take on many forms. After all, they can be as unique as the women themselves. Adventure seekers may want to hike through the canyons of Arizona, while spa lovers might choose to settle into a spa resort and not leave the property until its time to go home. While it might seem like an unnecessary luxury, a girls getaway is a gift to yourself that you should indulge in at least every couple of years. You’ll return feeling refreshed, renewed, and reinvigorated, with memories to last a lifetime.
